Writing / Editing / Proofreading

These days, content is king all over the world, with companies from all industries calling for everything from snappy product descriptions to SEO-friendly blogs. There is, of course,  a load of opportunities for writers, editors and proofreaders in China across a range of industries, including manufacturing, education and editorial. And all such jobs can be done remotely, especially during these “special times”.

Social media

Jobs for social media specialists have been on the rise for several years in China. As the country has its own social media landscape, domestic companies with an international outlook are always looking for experts in foreign social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. As you only need a computer and a phone, social media management is an easy way to earn money from home in China. You’ll likely need to be comfortable with at least one social media management tool, such as Hootsuite, Buffer or Sprout. But while this job might sound like a doddle, it requires a lot of attention to detail, good organizational skills and a strong grasp of English (or whatever other foreign language you’re employed to post in).

Art & Graphic Design

Producing visual content is another a great way to earn money from home in China. Posters, banners, logos, fliers, book covers and magazine infographics are all in high demand. If you have any skills relating to art and design, you’ll no doubt know that working alone, either at your computer or your sketchpad, is the best way to get the job done. As such, any one of these jobs can be done from the comfort of your couch.

Marketing

Marketing usually involves coming up with a concept, developing it into an intelligible format and making decisions on how to push your message to the masses. Chinese companies in all industries are looking for foreigners with a good understanding of the markets they come from or ideas on how to sell to foreigners in China. While you would no doubt need to meet your team (perhaps virtually) for pow-wows every now and again, creating PPTs and surveys, calling clients and making spreadsheets, graphs and reports can easily be done remotely.

Selling online

With e-commerce having taken off like a rocket in the past 10 years in China, it’s a wonder anyone goes to bricks-and-mortar stores anymore. Whether you’re working for someone else or selling your own products, digital sales is another job that can be done from anywhere, and China’s seamless e-commerce platforms and logistics services make it all the more easy. Many small Chinese businesses are selling their products exclusively online, allowing customers from around the country to get in on the action. Whether you’re selling art, food, cosmetics, imported products or handmade picture frames, running an online store is an obvious and easy way to make money from home in China.

Crypto currencies and trading stocks

We’ve all heard about Bitcoin and Warren Buffet, but few of us have ever thought about having a go at trading ourselves. Buying up and trading in crypto currencies and other stocks can be highly lucrative, if you’re lucky and you have at least a bit of an idea of what you’re doing. Often, the best strategy will be a long-term hold of a coin or a stock, with the ultimate goal of it gaining value so you can sell it down the line. Getting into this as a newbie can be pretty daunting, but there are plenty of online tutorials and advice about how to start. With global stock markets currently tanking, you can also no doubt get some great deals. Ultimately, though, the best advice is to start small and be strict with yourself. This isn’t so much a job but a risky (and hopefully lucrative) investment in your future.

Miscellaneous

There are dozens of ways you can earn money from home in China. Here are a few other options you might want to explore: video editing / voice over work / consulting / online therapy / fitness training (creating online diets & programs or hosting one-on-one exercise classes in your apartment) / customer service / programming / web development / online tutoring... the opportunities are endless!
