Where to Find the Most Authentic Italian Coffee in Shanghai

Italian’s have a true passion for coffee. Therefore, when we think of coffee we’re likely to immediately think of Italy. Thankfully, it’s possible to find an authentic Italian café in Shanghai; great news given that coffee has already become such an important part of our lives.

A taste of Milan

Café Sibilla – Bund 18
The coffee at Bund 18 is perhaps closest to the real thing. That’s because its owner is the famous Moratti, president of the world renowned football team Inter Milan. When the café first opened last year, hordes of Italian football fans came to check it out, almost turning it into a football club in its own right. And of course Milan’s signature colour, sapphire blue, has also become the symbol of this elegant café.

The flavor of the coffee at Café Sibilla is unforgettable. Another thing worth mentioning are the mouthwateringly delicious Italian paninis on offer there – sourced from the the famous De Santis Panini restaurant, also part of Moratti’s empire. Only the freshest and healthiest ingredients are used on delicious crispy breads straight from the oven. When leaving, you can also buy some celebrity merchandise to give to your friends. For example, there are loads of handmade chocolates sculpted into number shapes, so you can get your favorite football shirt number combinations if you like.

Because of the owner’s major connections, this café has become a favorite international celebrity spot. Both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Naomi Campbell have been spotted here. Come here yourself to sip on coffee in an elegant atmosphere, listen to classical music, and enjoy the Italian vibe that’s brought to you by way of Milan.

Segafredo Zanetti Espresso
Segafredo is perhaps not as famous as Starbucks in Shanghai. However, in Europe you can see the Italian Segafredo coffee sign in the small alleys and big streets of most cities. Italians really like their espressos, just as Chinese people have a special interest in tea. If people don’t drink a few cups of coffee before or after a meal, then they’ll be lacking one of their most basic pleasures in life.
Segafredo’s reputation is down to the fact that the coffee comes entirely from a private run business, from the moment the coffee bean is planted right until you savour the finished product. This in turn guarantees the coffee’s authentic Italian flavour. The company’s signature espresso is especially potent: its coffee is served with a glass of water and a piece of dark chocolate.
The company’s head describes the standard way of drinking Italian coffee like this: First sway the glass gently from side to side and smell the aroma of the coffee. Take a little sip of the foam at the edge of the cup, and then drink down the entire cup in one go. The best thing is if you complete the above described action within 15 seconds. That way you’ll truly taste the rich flavour of the aromatic coffee.
The café also produces many traditional Italian foods, such as handmade pizza and paninis, as well as a variety of different alcohols. For this reason, many Italian people who live or work nearby are regulars here. Some people even come here a few times per day. Once you’ve tried the coffee here once, you’ll probably end up coming back regularly. Take it from the Italians, they know their coffee best.
