New Bars in Shanghai This Spring

New Bars in Shanghai This Spring
By Susie Gordon ,

Shanghai changes quickly, and often. Every season, bars close, and new ones open in their place. We take a look at what’s new on the drinking scene this spring.

1) Dr. WineView In Map
This addition to Shanghai’s wine bar collection is a warmly lit, brick-walled vinopolis covering two floors on Fumin Lu. It’s already popular with wine lovers, who like the wide selection (130 bottles) and rustic French snacks and sandwiches. There are a couple of long tables for large parties, sofas downstairs, and lots of smaller tables in intimate corners.

2) El CóctelView In Map
The team behind popular tapas joint El Willy have recently opened a cocktail bar on Yongfu Lu, and it’s rapidly becoming a firm favourite among cocktail fans (some people even say it’s the best cocktail bar in town – high praise for a bar still in its infancy!). The drinks list is plentiful (cocktails priced at 68 RMB each) and the head barman is a cocktail expert from Japan.

3) The Monkey LoungeView In Map
The buzz around Monkey Lounge never quite lived up to expectations, but it’s still worth a look if you’re in the area and want to try a new place. That’s if you can find it… There’s no sign; you have to head down Lane 56 on Donghu Lu and sniff out number 22. Once inside, you kind of wonder if it was worth the hassle, but there’s something fun about the subterfuge.

地址: 上海东湖路56弄22号, 近新乐路
Tel: 150 2185 992

4) Judy’s LoungeView In Map
The name Judy is associated with the strip of seedy bars that used to adorn Tongren Lu. However, since the area was cleaned up late last year, Judy has moved her headquarters to Xikang Lu near Plaza 66. It’s a cut above the sleaze of Judy’s and Judy’s Too, but still has a certain tacky charm. The lounge consists of a big room with a gallery up top, and lush leather sofas on the main floor, along with a chandelier, and blue-lit bar. The place comes alive at weekends with regular parties, and there are happy hours during the week.

Add: 99-3 Xikang Lu, near Nanyang Lu, Shanghai
地址: 上海西康路99-3,近南阳路
Tel: 021 6289 3001
Open: Daily, 16:00-late

5) DAO LoungeView In Map
If you like clubbing and drinking Chinese style (banging hip-hop, dice games, tables, Chivas mixed with green tea) then you’ll love DAO. If you prefer things a little more sedate, you might not be in your element here. The impressive décor is Buddhist-themed, with a huge statue at the entrance, and illuminated ‘OM’ symbols behind the bar.

Add: 2F of Chong Hing Financial Center, 288 Nanjing Xilu, near Xinchang Lu, Huangpu District, Shanghai
Tel: 021 3366 3179
Open: Daily, 11:30-03:00
