Drink and Eat: Best Happy Hour Munchies in Shanghai

Drink and Eat: Best Happy Hour Munchies in Shanghai
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

Everyone knows that no one does happy hour like Shanghai. What would we be without our buy-one-get-one-frees and our 50% offs and our 100 RMB open bars? Painfully sober, that’s what. And now restaurants are upping their games to get even more happy hour patrons through the door. How? By offering free munchies to scarf down alongside the wicked drink deals. So next time your stomach’s growling as you leave the office, keep these places in mind to fill all your food and drink needs.

Daily Deals:

1) AvalonView In Map
Tucked away on an assuming section of Changle Lu, Avalon has one of the best outdoor rooftop seating around (but shhh, don’t tell anyone - it’s still refreshingly undiscovered!). They also serve an amazing happy hour, with select cocktails, wine and sparkling wine for just 28 RMB. In addition, they throw in complimentary canapés such as a mixed olive plate and a to-die-for quiche. It’s a great (cheap) way to enjoy this oft pricey restaurant.

Opening hours: Daily, 15:00-23:30

2) The BREWView In Map
Yes, it’s a bit of a hassle to get out there (it’s located in The Kerry Hotel out in Pudong), but The BREW’s impressive selection of house brewed beer (and cider!) is worth it – as are their free “signature pub snacks” thrown in when you take advantage of the buy-one-get-one-free offer on any of their brews. I definitely recommend their spicy peanuts.

Add: The Kerry Hotel, 1388 Huamu Lu, near Fangdian Lu, Shanghai

Tel: 021 6169 8888

3) XTD ElevatedView In Map
The brand spankin’ new XTD Elevated in Xintiandi is doing its best to make their new space your hangout of choice. Two cocktails will run you 150 RMB during their 17:30-19:30 happy hour (just imagine what their regular prices are like). You’ll also be treated to a variety of complimentary canapés to help make those cocktails go down a bit easier.

Monday-Friday Deals:

1) Morton’s The SteakhouseView In Map
The happy hour to end all happy hours is at Morton’s The Steakhouse, located in Pudong’s IFC mall. In case you haven’t heard by now, from 17:00-19:00 they offer 38 RMB select MORtinis (get it?) like Vodka, Gin, Appletinis, Chocotinis, and Cosmos alongside all the free mini steak sandwiches you can eat. Free. Steak. Sandwiches. Got that?

Saturday Deals:

1) Fat Olive (Expo Village)View In Map
While the Expo Village isn’t the most convenient of locations, I’m betting it’s worth the hike for Fat Olive’s surprising Saturday night happy hour deal. Buy a bucket of beers between 16:00 and 21:00 for 150 RMB, and they’ll throw in four mezze (ie: sharing) platters to pair with them. With Saturday night deals a rare thing indeed, this one just might be a winner.

Sunday Deals:

1) BrownstoneView In Map
The perfect place to lounge away the afternoon, Brownstone offers select beers and cocktails for between 25 and 30 RMB, along with free hotdogs. Lest you think these dogs are your typical Chinese version, rest assured these puppies come fresh off the grill and are satisfyingly authentic (ie: not sweet). The bar of complimentary toppings like onions and relish doesn’t hurt either.

2) CharView In Map
If you’re in the mood to enjoy a nice view with your food and drink, take advantage of Char’s unobstructed view of the Huangpu River during their Sunday happy hour. Jugs of “summer cocktails” (think Sangria, Pimm’s, etc.) go for 99 RMB from 14:00-17:30, and are served alongside free appetizers. Not a bad way to end the weekend.
