Bang for Your Buck - Shanghai’s Best Happy Hour Deals

Bang for Your Buck - Shanghai’s Best Happy Hour Deals
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

With so many new bars popping up all over Shanghai, and with old ones jumping back in the game with great new specials, it can be hard to decide what the best drink deals in town really are. Everyone has their favourites, but some places go that extra step to make a happy hour, well, really happy. Here are ten of the best happy hours going on now.

Pretty much the undisputed king of happy hours, the big debate is how they can give away such cheap booze and still manage to stay in business: 10 RMB draft beer, 10 RMB for shots of the house liquor, 12 RMB for house mixed drinks, and two-for-one cocktails. They even give you a cheap deal on food so you’re not drinking on an empty stomach – 10 RMB for chips and salsa. This deal happens everyday from 10:00pm-12:00am. That’s right, people – I said everyday

A classy place indeed, their drink prices are a little on the higher end. Go between 3:00-7:00pm or 10:00pm-12:00am on weekdays, however, and the prices are slashed in half, making them more than reasonable for the quality you get. Or if you’re a mojito fan, drop by on Mondays from 6:00pm until close for their 10 RMB deal.

Bell Café & BarView In Map
You can’t really beat Bell Café & Bar’s location (Taikang Lu) or their insanely cute interior (Want to sip cocktails while lying on a loft?) And while their prices normally aren’t anything special, their buy-one-get-one deal on beer and cocktails from 5:00pm-8:00pm certainly is.

Bricco CaféView In Map
This made the list because it’s a booze and food combination, which is always a nice treat on a Wednesday. From 7:00pm until close, enjoy two glasses of wine and all-you-can-eat finger food for 80 RMB.

The ChaletView In Map
This one is, in part, powered by reader reviews and suggestions. The other part of it came into play because from 3:00pm until 9:00pm, all house wines, beers, and, well, drinks are just 20 RMB. That might officially be the best happy hour deal in all of Shanghai, which is an impressive distinction indeed.

I also included this one because of the booze and food combination. This time, it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet and a glass of wine or beer for 80 RMB. And just like Bricco Café’s deal, it’s happening every Wednesday (only this time it starts at 6:00pm). There must be something about Wednesdays that drive people to need a good old-fashioned boozy pick-me-up.

Their buy-one-get-one-free happy hour every weekday from 4:00pm-7:00pm ends a bit on the early side, but is well worth the trip – especially if you take advantage of their new 99 RMB deal. They call it an “Aussie seven course degustation menu,” which basically means a meat pie (course number one) and a six-pack of beer (courses two through seven). Your choices range from Victoria Bitter to Steinlager to Coopers. They don’t offer this deal on Fridays, though, so plan on making this an early-in-the-week visit.

O’Malley’s Irish PubView In Map
Everyone’s favourite pub slashes prices on their normally slightly-overpriced beers, making Guiness and Kilkenny draft 44 RMB, Stella draft 35 RMB, cocktails 30 RMB, and Carlsberg, Maredsous, and house spirits all just 25 RMB. Running from noon until 8:00pm, it’s one of the longest happy hours out there.

Sasha’sView In Map
With the warm weather approaching, Sasha’s back patio is once again the place to be, especially during their 50 percent off happy hour deal, every day from 5:00pm till 7:00pm. Consistently voted one of the top al fresco dining and drinking destinations, this one’s a no brainer.
