Beautify in Shanghai: Nails and Waxing

Beautify in Shanghai: Nails and Waxing

There comes a time in every girl’s life where a bottle of nail polish is just not enough! Where an indulgence in a manicure and pedicure is a treat that quickly becomes a regular beauty fix. There are so many beauty services that girls call on from a steaming facial to the pretty pink polish on ones little toe. And then of course there is the essential right to wax, pluck and shave all the bits in between.

There is an undisputable amount of trust that is held between a client and a beautician, requiring the beautician to pay upmost care in the attempt to beautify. In a city where instructions and wishes can easily (and dramatically) become lost in translation, we thought it necessary to point you in the right direction. Here are two salons that receive the most recommendations from expat locals.

Dragonfly Therapeutic Retreat 悠庭保健会所
Dragonfly Therapeutic Retreats are an international beauty spa group with 10 shops in Shanghai alone (visit their website for the list of locations). It is widely regarded as a top salon, having gained recognition from persons far and wide, even The New York Times. If you’re on the road or based in another city you can also find branches in Beijing, Hangzhou, Qingdao and Suzhou.

The salon promotes itself as a luxury retreat for business people and upmarket travellers pushing massages as their focal service. Aside from the indulgence packages they have an extensive service menu catering for all essential treatments and upkeep services. They use top quality products including Sothys beauty treatments and OPI nail care and they pride themselves on their attentive staff who have a basic and communicative level of English.

A basic pedicure and manicure will set you back 265RMB. It is far from a “basic service” – as you are seated in a soft leather armchair with your feet relaxed into a sea salt bath, you’ll sip on tea and flick through their selection of English fashion magazines – it is heavenly. Describing their waxing in the same manner doesn’t evoke the same lustful experience but they are good, they know what they are doing and will get rid of all manner of unwanted hairs including Brazilian wax for 220RMB.

Helen’s Nail Spa
Helen’s Nail Spa is a beautician with two locations in Shanghai. It provides essential beauty services including waxing and as for their names sake suggests, they have an extensive list of nail care services including gel nails.

In their intimate beauty boutique they create an inviting and warm ambience that makes sure that your first visit will not be your last visit. Booking is not essential as they have a number of staff waiting on hand – you’ll find them seated at the nail bar practicing on each other!

They claim that their waxing is “gentle”; it’s hard to believe but as the giddy girls fuss over your fuzz, they are actually true to their claims. Their waxing list is comprehensive and includes the South American treatment!
