A farmer living in Dongxihu district of Wuhan has recently built a makeshift attack and surveillance tower on his contracted land – to fight and fend off eviction teams. The farmer, Yang Youde, said that he has successfully fended off two eviction teams with his home-made fireworks artillery already. Yang Youde repeatedly professed that he is not what people would refer to as 'nail-tenants', those that refuse to leave property because they want to negotiate a higher compensation price.

8-Meter Tall Surveillance and Attack Post to Defend and Protect 25 Acres of Land

56-year old farmer Yang Youde contracted a 25-acre land for commercial use a few years back, and the contract is good until the year 2029. On his land, Yang proceeded to raise fish and cattle, grown cotton and other fruits and crops that now support his livelihood. In order to try and halt the eviction team, Yang thought out of ways to build different contraptions along the road leading through his land – once lit up, these contraptions can effectively hinder and halt the eviction team on their tracks.

Yang built a few shacks that serviced as living quarters for himself and his wife on the land. And beside the shacks, he also built an 8-meter tall surveillance tower made out of wood; the post is a makeshift shack measuring around 3 square meters that is elevated high off the ground. Yang said that this is where he attacks and keeps surveillance, as the vantage point high above ground lends him great views of the 25 acre land below.

Firecrackers-Turned Projectiles with a Flight Length of a Few Hundred Meters

The surveillance post has no stairs, so Yang uses a bamboo ladder to get up to his vantage position. He keeps an arsenal of firecrackers stacked up there in the shack (valued around 2,000 RMB), and he separates the firecrackers and each serves as a firework projectile which is then placed within a home-made metal cylinder and artillery. When attacking, he grips the wooden rod fixated to the cylinder with a rope with one hand, and lights the fuse of the firecracker with the other hand; the 'bomb' is then propelled with a loud bang out of the metal cylinder and explodes a few hundred meters away on the ground – the effects of which are quite astounding.

Successfully Fended Off a Hundred-Men Eviction Team at One Time

Yang said that he had learned last year that the government wanted use of his 25-acre land; but because he and the officials had reached a standstill in regards to compensation, Yang had refused to move.

“The eviction team made many threatening statements about how they plan to use force on me.” As a result, Yang prepared accordingly by arming himself with firecrackers earlier this year, for fear of retaliation. He then stripped a metal dump cart of its front and used it as an arsenal-carrying cart to try and fend off eviction teams in case they would resort to force.

Earlier this year, on February 6th, a team of 30 or so men had come to Yang's land with plans to try and use force to evict him. “I then lit up my case of firecrackers on the dump cart, but they were all hiding behind their tractors. And once I ran out of ammunition, they then came out and jumped on me. They gave me a good beating.” The team had not forcefully torn down Yang's shacks at the time but had threatened to come again later for a full eviction. On that day, Yang and his family and friends had started building the surveillance tower and post and made metal cylinders for projecting fireworks to prepare for the attack.

Yang said that on May 25th, another team of around a hundred men wearing helmets, holding shields, and escorted by heavy farming machines, had arrived on his land. “I saw them from afar and quickly climbed to my tower. I used my new weapons and shot a few fireworks at them. They stopped in their tracks. Then local police arrived and successfully convinced them to leave.”

“I am not a Nail-Tenant”

Yang repeatedly professed that he is not the typical 'nail-tenant' who wants a higher than usual compensation price. “What I'm asking is by the books, calculated according to government policy,” Yang declared.

Yang said that he will continue to try and fend off the eviction team this way, with home-made weaponry. He has also added a new type of close-contact weapon, a type of “gasoline bomb”. Yang has also put up a rocker in his makeshift tower and post, intending to keep round-the-clock watch on his land for signs of invaders.
