On January 25th, “the Pillar of South Heaven” (南天一柱), a famous scenic attraction in Zhangjiajie (张家界) has been officially renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (《阿凡达》“哈利路亚山”).” The Pillar of South Heaven is located in Yuanjiajie (袁家界) which is itself a famous scenic area within Zhangjiajie. The site is famous for its striking natural beauty and pillar-like rock formation. In December 2008, a Hollywood photographer shot pictures of the area for four days. Most of the scenic photos later became the planet of Pandora in the Hollywood fantasy film “Avatar.” However, many netizens believe that the site, which is already world famous for its scenery and whose name is riddled with history, should not be changed because of a film.
