Woman Offers 10,000 RMB a Day for a Spring Festival "Boyfriend"

Recently, there was a fervent discussion online about an ad posted in front of the men's dormitory at Peking University. The hand-written ad was supposedly posted by a female student at the university and was headed “10,000 RMB a day for a boyfriend to take home for the Spring Festival celebrations.”

The ad read:
“My mom has ordered, 'If you don't bring home a boyfriend, then you can forget about coming home for the holiday.’ A boyfriend is needed to accompany me home to Anhui province for the Spring Festival. Looking for a handsome guy (high-spirited), someone majoring in Chinese literature is preferred. Those interested can meet up with me for further details.

Rent time: Chinese New Year's Eve from 9:00-21:00 (no need to stay overnight)
Fee: 10,000 RMB (travel fare and meals are not included)

Don't bother answering if you're not sincere about this...”

Chinese netizens expressed conflicting opinions about “renting a boyfriend or girlfriend” to help appease the parents (for the big holiday at least) that had been hounding after them to date and get married.

Those opposed stated that this is an irresponsible act which does not take into consideration the possible repercussions and complications involved. “And especially for a woman, this could open up a can of worms and allow herself to fall prey to those with bad intentions,” wrote one netizen Others thought that telling a white lie with a rented lover was the only plausible way to deal with the anxious parent problem.

A man going by the name Raymond wrote that he would rent himself out for the holiday, saying that there's no easier job than this and stating, “That kind of money would take me months to earn with my job. I could use the money to do a lot of things”.

This is not exactly a new situation. We published an expose in 2009 about Spring Festival lover leasing, but it doesn’t look the situation is disappearing any time soon. What do you thing about renting a date to appease anxious parents? Would you place that kind of ad? Or apply for that kind of job? Sound off in the comments section below.
