On the morning of December 17 Mr. Zhou, a 56 year old zookeeper who had worked at Shanghai zoo for nearly 30 years, went into the tiger enclosure to clean it and never came out. The other workers noticed he was missing when he didn’t come for lunch. They found his body in the tiger enclosure covered in blood, it was clear he had been killed by the South China tiger.

The tiger is nine years old, and was born in Shanghai Zoo, he is currently being held in an interior cage while the case is being investigated.

Good for the tiger. We should not be keeping large animals in captivity for entertainment or "education". We ought to be taught a lesson. Done. May it happen more often to us....human beings that just use this Earth at will with no thought that we are SHARING it, not ruling over it. Maybe if this keeps happening, we will get a clue. Sorry an old guy had to die. He probably actually loved those animals since he's been there so many years. But if the tiger was content, he probably would not have been compelled to kill. The tiger attacked and killed him for a reason. Hunger? Frustration? Reacting to a Fear of Humans? Insanity? All are probable reasons.

Well let's hope the tiger doesn't end up the same as we read about in the story regarding the Harbin woman and the tiger skin. Sad way for a long term employee to finish up but I guess a wild animal is a wild animal even if born in captivity.

Yeah, it's not like they'll be understanding that it's in the beast's nature to kill, and that it was a captive animal after all. I wouldn't be surprised if the family tried to claim the hide as "accident compensation". It would be funny if the tiger had to appear in court! Who knows, it might end up being auctioned illegally again, as another 'family heirloom'...

Dunno much about zookeeping, but it seems wise to never tend to a dangerous animal alone, in case something like this happens. I'm guessing there might have been time to save his life if there were others present.

yeah, I guess the old guy got comfortable around tigers and let his guard down. It just shows a broad lack of understanding about the animals; their needs, their motives, their natural behaviors and response to stress.
