Zhuhai Attractions

On the waterfront at Xianglu Bay to the east of the city, stands a Zhuhai landmark: the Statue of the Fisher Girl. Once upon a time, the Dragon King's daughter fell in love with a young fisherman and disguised herself as a fisher girl to be with him. Spiteful villagers told him she was not a fisher girl and in a fit of anger, the fisherman asked his bride to remove the bracelet she always wore. The bracelet was a gift from the gods to the girl, guaranteeing her immortality: as soon as she removed it, she died. The fisherman was distraught and realized he had been wrong to test her love. Moved by his deep remorse, the immortal Jiuzhou Elder grew herbs to heal her, watering them with his own blood. She came back to life and married the fisherman with whom she lived happily ever after. On their wedding day, they gave Jiuzhou Elder a gigantic pearl as a gift of thanks. The statue in the bay shows the fisher girl holding this bright pearl up into the air with both hands, admiring its luminosity which symbolizes the simple beauty of Zhuhai.

Over the fisher girl's shoulder and across muddy waters, sits the glistening lights & iconic skyline of the island of Macau. Visitors to Zhuhai can take a ferry-ride out across the bay and around Macau, or to any of the 140 islands that make up Zhuhai such as Qi'ao Island, Hengqin Island, Gaolan Island or the Wanshan Archipelago to find clearer water and white-sand beaches. Water-sports are popular here too, and visitors can take part in any number of them, for example jet-skiing, boating and swimming.

In the west lies the Meixi Royal Stone Archways, built by Emperor Guangxu to honor Chen Fang, a Consul to Honolulu in the Qing Dynasty. Whilst only three of the original four structures survive, they are excellent examples of Paifang: a traditional Chinese architectural style associated with virtuous people. Nearby stands the New Summer Palace: a reconstruction of the original Summer Palace in Beijing which was badly damaged by British and French troops during the Second Opium War.

Zhuhai sits in beautiful landscape and has been blessed with several mountains and parks such as Shijing Mountain Park, and the Wilinyuan Theme Park. Huangyang Mountain is acknowledged to be the most beautiful, its slopes covered in waterfalls, fields of green tea and a multitude of reservoirs and temples. Jintai Temple is the most famous temple in the region: bordered on three sides by mountains and on the fourth by a calm reservoir, it has been a place of pilgrimage and worship for Buddhists for centuries. Other natural wonders of Zhuhai include the city's hot springs, such as those at the Yuwenquan Hot Spring Resort, to which herbs are added every few hours providing therapeutic relief for bad circulation and muscular pain.

Zhuhai has several museums and research organizations for educational and entertaining trips. Crocodile Island and the Tangjia Gongle Garden Botanical Garden can furnish you with many interesting tidbits about the flora and fauna of the area. The Agricultural Scientific Academy houses over 150 kinds of cactus and 100 varieties of tropical desert plants 2000 species of bird and a large collection of sculptures sting amongst the plant beds.
