Yunnan Earthquake Death Toll Reaches 615 amidst Epidemic Fears
Aug 08, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The death toll from the earthquake that struck Yunnan Province on August 3 has reached 615, according to local authorities, as many are still struggling to survive without shelter or access to good and potable water.

A further 3,143 people are being treated for injuries whilst 114 are still missing.

Authorities have now warned of increased risks of a tuberculosis outbreak, as people are living in emergency camps with limited access to clean drinking water.

Yunnan province already has a higher than average tuberculosis rate. Officials from the National Health and Family Planning Commission are concerned that damaged infrastructure and a lack of resources will hinder epidemic prevention efforts.

There are currently 1,668 military and civilian medical workers on site providing medical care.
