Yulin Dog Meat Festival Goes On Despite Protests; 10,000+ Dogs Consumed
Jun 25, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Sad news of late, as despite protests, the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival went underway as planned on June 21. Participants in the event reportedly consumed over 10,000 dogs during the one-day festival, though one Yulin citizen told a reporter, “The actual figure of dogs eaten doesn’t stop there.”

Despite dog lovers across the country voicing their objection the festival, some Yulin locals fought back by stating, “If you eat pork then why don’t you ban the killing of pigs? Which law states that eating dog meat is illegal?” The protesters made the point that many of the dogs eaten during the festival were likely stolen or abandoned hounds.

Regarding where the slaughtered dogs came from, the Yulin local government have yet to provide a proper answer. Upon contacting the Mayor of the City, one reporter learned that the festival was organized purely by the locals and had no officialdom. Local departments were apparently working with the organizers of the festival to ensure that food safety measures were adhered to (as if that’s the real issue at hand).

On the day of the festival, city Vice Mayor of the City released a statement which read, “There has been no official government clampdown on the banning of the festival. As a ban would affect the lives of at least one million people, we should look at approaching this issue slowly.”

R.I.P. our dear canine friends.

This is such cruelty. I have no idea how is the 21st century people can still have this "festival" and pretend that it is "tradition". It does not matter if they are dogs, chickens or pigs ... this is just a massacre.
