Your Phone May be Shut Off September 1 in Crack Down on Real-Name Registration

China's three mobile operators are beginning a push to crack down on phone numbers not registered using real-name registration.

China Mobile Guangdong said that the provider will limit communication services next month for those without real-name registration. A person with an unregistered number will be able to receive calls and text messages, but will not be able to send calls or send texts.

None of the operators plan to cut off service altogether without plenty of warning. All three providers have been sending “reminders,” to their large number of users with unregistered numbers. First a user will receive a number of SMS warnings, then their phone will be set to limited use, and then, if nothing changes, service may be completely shut off.

Registering your number is simple. Simply head to a China Mobile, Telecom, or Unicom store or counter and bring your SIM card, ID card or passport, mobile number, and service password.

It is estimated that there are at least 130 million mobile users in China that are either unregistered or registered with the incorrect number.
