Currently Xiamen has two passenger train stations, Xiamen Railway Station and Xiamen North Railway Station. The train station in Xiamen operates services to most of the major cities in Fujian Province and major cities across China. Most popular destinations include Fuzhou, Sanming and Zhangzhou, Beijing (33 hrs) and Guangzhou (15 hrs). During festivals and other busy times, special tourist trains run between Xiamen and cities such as Wuyishan.

Xiamen North Railway Station is one of the stations for the Fuzhou-Xiamen High Speed Trains. In 2010, Xiamen North Railway Station was opened and now serves as the main station for high-speed trains in the southern area with services to Ningbo (5.5 hrs), Hangzhou (7.5 hrs) and Shanghai (8.5 hrs). A new high-speed line between Xiamen and Shenzhen – which will reduce the journey time to three hours – is expected to open in 2013.

There are three different ways to book a train ticket in Xiamen: over the phone, online and at the ticket window. Tickets can be purchased over the telephone (9510 5105) 4-12 days (tickets during Spring Festival travel rush are available 20 days in advance since January 2013, but this is subject to change). According to new rules introduced on Jan 1, 2013, all train tickets must be collected within 24 hours of purchase. Tickets are non transferable and are void if not used on the correct day.

To book tickets online, use the site www.12306.cn. Tickets can be reserved daily from 7:00-23:00 from 12-20 days in advance (subject to change; pre-sale booking periods often change during the Spring Festival and other important National Holidays). You can buy rail tickets at the sales window up to 10-20 days in advance (also subject to change).
