Woman Sues SouFun for 110,000 RMB Real Estate Scam
May 05, 2016 By eChinacities.com

A woman is suing real estate portal SouFun after being scammed by an agency advertised on the site.

Mrs. Tan purchased an English apartment to rent to students from an agency that she found on SouFun. After she paid them 110,000 RMB, the agency disappeared. Tan believes that SouFun should be held accountable and should compensate her for the loss. Haidian district court recently accepted the case.

Tan said that in early February 2014, she saw an ad on SouFun for a “United Kingdom apartment specialist.” She clicked on the ad and saw that it was for a real estate agency called Shenzhen Kangzhou Investment Management Ltd. Co. The agency claimed to help Chinese clients purchase apartments in the United Kingdom near famous universities. They said that they helped Chinese buyers purchase small apartments near good universities, and later help find and manage renters for the property. Furthermore, the agency claimed that loans to purchase student apartments had the lowest lending rates in the country.

Tan trusted SouFun, and decided to purchase property from the agency. She paid business manager Mr. Li a 20,000 RMB down payment to reserve an apartment on May 12, 2014. Then she sent an 89,000 RMB down payment via courier on May 13.

In July 2014, the agency disappeared, and Tan could not get in touch with them. She contacted SouFun, asked them to verify the company’s qualifications and requested a refund. SouFun did not respond to her query.

Tan believes that SouFun violated China’s consumer protection law and advertising law by advertising the agency on its website.

A company in China scamming people? But...but...that's impossible! Chinese are always so honest and trustworthy and would never dream of deceiving people. Their word is their bond, a handshake is as good as a contract... That's what this woman must have thought when she sent a huge chunk of money without doing any research on the company or trying to contact them first. She's lost a lot of money but hopefully gained some common sense from this experience.
