Woman Receives 10,000 RMB in Compensation in One Mao Coins; Takes Days to Count

A woman surnamed Wu, won a lawsuit after she and her husband were badly beaten by a staff member of a rice noodle restaurant in Kunming last year. In what was clearly a massive “F-You” to the couple, the restaurant paid 10,000 RMB in one Mao coins.

Last September, Mrs. Wu ate at a rice noodle restaurant with her husband. After noticing that her bowl was dirty she asked to get a new one. One of the restaurant workers refused to give her a new bowl but eventually the owner agreed to give her a refund. As she left the restaurant, a restaurant worker ran after her claiming she paid 5 kuai too little. They then got into a fight and two other restaurant workers joined in the brawl. Mrs. Wu suffered from a concussion and three of her husband’s ribs were broken.

At the end of June this year, the court ordered the restaurant to pay Ms. Wu and her husband 68,000 RMB in compensation. On August 9, a person from the restaurant called Ms. Wu that 10,000 RMB compensation was ready for collection. As Mr. and Mrs. Wu went downstairs they were dumbfounded to find eight big sacks full of one Mao coins. Mrs. Wu then called the police as she didn’t know what to do with the heavy load of coins. The police helped her store the money at the police station for safe keeping and the next day she tried to find a bank that would be willing to count and accept the coins.

After being shot down by two banks, she finally found an ICBC bank that agreed to accept the money. It took 18 workers an entire work day to count 5000 RMB worth of coins.
