Woman Poisons Boyfriend With Puffer Fish Venom: Claims it was ‘Accidental’

The Wuhan Prosecutor’s Office charged a woman with a particularly unusual crime last Wednesday: murder by puffer fish venom.

According to the testimony of the accused, Miss Xiao, she had decided to commit suicide after becoming depressed. Upon hearing that puffer fish venom provides a relatively painless death, she purchased some online for 500 RMB. She then mixed it into a pot of yogurt along with ground up sleeping pills.

She claimed that her boyfriend had drunk the yogurt accidentally while she was out of the room and she only realized after he starting complaining of dizziness. Suspecting that he’d been poisoned, Miss Xiao was ‘extremely upset’ and drank the rest of the yogurt in a bid to end it all. She allegedly passed out until noon the next day by which point, her boyfriend had died.

Police poked several holes in her story however, suggesting that she had intentionally murdered her boyfriend, especially given the fact that she didn’t contact emergency services after ‘discovering’ he had drunk the poison; she spent seven days with her boyfriend’s body, dressing him and even put lipstick on him. She apparently intended to buy more poison to kill herself with, but was eventually persuaded to hand herself in by a cousin.

More tellingly, in the weeks leading up to the incident, she had lied to the boyfriend’s family about his health, used his phone to ask for leave from his company and sold the computer she used to purchase the poison. She had also posted a message online asking whether one should commit suicide after murdering someone.

What is it with these stories? Are they supposed to scare people away from marrying Chinese women?
