Woman Invited to 8 Weddings in National Holiday: Spends a Month’s Salary on Hongbao
Oct 09, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The National Holiday should be a time to take a hard earned break and relax with family. However, it’s also one of the busiest times of year for weddings as one woman in Ningbo found out.

Ms Lin received 8 wedding invitations during the holidays, all of which were from friends and colleagues. She couldn’t back out as that would have caused a massive loss of face, so she sucked it up and attended them all. However, due to the traditional Chinese custom of giving a hongbao- a cash gift in a red envelope- the weddings ended up being extremely costly. The amount of money you give to the bride and groom in a hongbao depends on the relationship and Ms Li had to give at least 1,000 RMB to each couple over the holiday in the end spending an entire month’s salary.

Several other people in the same boat as Ms Lin have complained online that they were ‘bankrupted’ by the October holiday.

I have been lucky with the weddings I have went to. My coworkers and friends when they have gotten married have told Guests not to give money. They told me they saved enough and have everything they want so they don't want others to pay them.

hahahah...."true friends " doesnt existt in china....its not me but the chinese people saying, everyone is friends till an extent and benefit... i drive a lambo means i have 500 friends, and only 5 if i have a polo... true friends means you put them before yourself, and are willing to step infront of a bullet for them....would you?.. sharing wechat selfies is not true friends...

Chinese weddings make me sick. They pass no expectation of what's appropriate. Chinese weddings are bullshit on many fronts. Chinese people should do themselves a favour and boycott weddings, like I have decided to do. Unless I can't. Fuk Chinese weddings.

Ah, China. Where weddings are a way to get money out of your friends and relatives. How romantic.
