After entering an elevator and pressing the button for her floor, 27-year-old hotel worker Xiao Zhao from Yuyao in Zhejiang Province began screaming and thrashing about inside as the elevator made its way up to the eighth floor. Hearing the distress, Xiao’s colleagues immediately ran to the elevator when it arrived on the eighth floor, to find Xiao covered in sweat and gasping for air. After her colleagues took her to a nearby hospital, Xiao’s breathing and heart rate returned to normal. She explained her erratic behaviour to her colleagues as follows: the carpet placed in the elevator that morning was red in color, and Xiao, who suffers from erythrophobia, was terrified of it, causing her to hyperventilate and lash out uncontrollably.
