Woman Charged 1103 RMB for Breaking Cup at Wuxi Teahouse

A Wuxi woman was charged over a thousand RMB after her elderly mother accidentally broke a teacup at an English import teahouse.

Ms. Wei, her sister, her mother, and her in-laws were strolling by the lake at Wuxi’s Wanxiang City on the afternoon of April 30. Wei’s elderly in-laws needed to rest, and the group decided to sit at an outdoor table at a local teahouse to take a break.

The cheapest item on the menu of the teahouse was a 58 RMB pot of tea. Wei and her family decided to order one. The waiter served the pot with one cup. Wei’s mother poured tea into the cup, took a sip, and passed it to her daughter. While trying to hand it over, the cup slipped from Wei’s mother’s hand and broke. Wei immediately comforted her elderly mother and told the waiter that she would pay for the cup.

When Wei went to the cashier for the bill, she was surprised at how much she had been charged for the cup. Teahouse staff told her that the cup was part of a set with a plate and tea kettle and the entire set cost 1298 Yuan. Wei saw that the set cost the same on sale in the teahouse shop.

“I had no idea I had to pay for the entire set, I felt blindsided,” said Wei. “The store said that the set was imported from England.” Wei did not want her elderly relatives to get worked up and decided to pay for the set. Staff agreed to reduce the price by 15% because the set was used and gave her a bill for 1103 RMB.

The store manager told Wei that the tea set was British bone China made exclusively for the store.

Wei reported the incident and returned to the shop yesterday with a representative from Wuxi Binhu District Market Supervision Administration. The owners agreed to refund her 603 RMB. Wei said that she was satisfied with the end arrangement.

Why would you serve tea in so expensive cups at the first place? I guess it's another scam where they patiently wait for customers to break something and get the most money out of them.

WhyHowWhen

The store sounds a cheater, tried to extract full price for a used set. However, all's well that ends well.
