Apr 30, 2009 By eChinacities.com

It was learned at the Opening Ceremony of the 2009 "World Reading Day and Program of Yuexiu District", on April 22nd that the District was considering the idea of moving the Xinhua Bookstore, the Science Bookstore, the Children's Bookstore, the Ancient Book Bookstore and the Foreign Language Bookstore, all on Beijing Lu, to Wende Lu, which would be over 200 meters away. The supporting book facilities would also be built to establish the largest modern book city in Guangzhou.

Officials of the Yuexiu District noted that they believed that, although the bookstore group on Beijing Lu could ensure visits, yet the noisy business environment was incompatible with the reading atmosphere. To relocate the bookstores to Wende Lu could meet needs of the visitors and still, due to the closeness to Beijing Lu, agree with client needs and, on the other hand, agree with the overall atmosphere of the nature of the cultural street, increase the cultural elements benefitting the nature of the cultural street.

There will be a multi-functional exhibition hall, a coffee bar and a number of book bars. And, in addition, inside the Dongfang Wende Plaza, there will be build an open pedestrian street of over 100 meters in length and 20 meters in width, which will house a world first-class exhibition hall of 9 meters in height, where such large-scale activities as celebrity book promotions, artistic salons and antique collections will be shown, all of which will be held regularly. What's more, the book city owns over 800 parking spaces. Additionally, the relevant planning is now under discussion with Guangzhou's key authorities.
