WTO Rules Against China in Rare Earths Case

WTO Rules Against China in Rare Earths Case
Mar 28, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced on March 26 its ruling in an appeal that the US, EU and Japan lodged against China. The ruling body announced that China’s duties and quotas relating to the exporting of rare earths are in violation of the organizations laws.

China owns 23 percent of the world’s rare earth reserves and the exporting of the minerals make up a big portion of world trade. But the WTO has ruled that the mining and production processes followed by China are damaging the environment. The organization did, however, reject the EUs claim that the Chinese government was discriminating against foreign companies and recognized China’s right to create its own natural resources protection policy.

China has 60 days to appeal the ruling.
