Verdi’s Rigoletto Opera Being Performed November 8 in Guangzhou
Nov 04, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Verdi’s Rigoletto was composed between 1850 and 1851 and like all good operas tells a tale of lust, love, deceit and tragedy. However, Rigoletto stands apart from other operas of the time for its moral ambiguity. Rather than simply being about villains vs. heroes, it is about the complexities of human nature and the dilemmas we face as we all straddle the line of virtue. On November 8 at Guangzhou’s Xinghai Concert Hall you can see the performance of this lustful tale.

Rigoletto is a hunchback with questionable virtues; he loves his daughter, wants to protect her but takes every stab he can at the nobles. The Duke is physically attractive but goes from woman to woman enjoying his decadent lifestyle. And Gilda, the daughter that Rigoletto so loved, kills herself to save the life of the Duke, even though she knows he isn’t loyal to her.
