The Shimao Stone City in Shenmu County, Shaanxi Province and the Liangzhu ancient ruins in Zhejiang Province were recently entered into the list of the world’s top ten archaeological discoveries, joining them with the likes of Egypt’s Giza Plateau and sites of the Maya civilization in Guatemala.

The announcement was made at the 1st Shanghai Archaeology Forum when the ten most significant historic sites in the world for 2011-2012 were chosen.

Shimao Stone City dates back to 2000 BC – between the Neolithic period to the early Xia Dynasty – and provides vital data on the beginning of Chinese civilization. Meanwhile, Liangzhu – which has 4300-5300 years of history –is known as the cradle of Neolithic jade culture and is one of the biggest ancient cities discovered in China.
