Top Government Officials Expelled from CCP for Corruption

Former Politburo member General Xu Caihou has been expelled from the Communist party alongside other top officials, state media reported yesterday.

Xu Caihou is to be handed over to prosecutors for a court martial after allegedly spending several months under house arrest. Three other high profile party members were also expelled yesterday for corruption including Jiang Jieming and Wang Yongchun, deputy head of the China National Petroleum Company.

Now the public’s eyes are turning to Zhou Yongkang, whose alleged investigation for fraud has been the subject of heated speculation: many are wondering if he is the next in line for a fall from grace. As a former member of the Politburo Standing Committee he would be the most senior official to face bribery charges in the history of the party.

It was also announced this morning that Wan Qingliang, Provincial Standing Committee member in Guangdong has been removed from his post and is under investigation.

Ridding the government of corruption has been one of Xi Jiping’s main objectives since becoming Chairman in November 2012. By targeting such high level officials, Beijing is demonstrating its commitment to fighting corruption on much more than a surface level.
