The Beijing Transportation Commission recently revealed that three new rail lines will open by the end of this year. The new subway lines are: the north section of Line 8 (phase II), starting in the south from the South Gate of the Olympic Forest Park, and heading north to Huilongguan Dong Dajie (total distance: 10.7 km); the south section of Line 9, starting in the south from Guogongzhuang, and heading north to Beijing West Railway Station (total distance: 12.4 km); the east section of the 15 (phase I), starting in the west from Houshayu, and heading east to Fengbo Station (total Distance: 11.4 km).

The opening of Line 15 will provide both Shunyi residents, as well as Pinggu and Miyun residents with direct access to Beijing's city centre. The opening of Line 9 will help alleviate traffic pressure in the key areas of the Beijing West Railway Station and Liuliqiao Passenger Transportation. Finally, the opening of Line 8 will make travelling around northern Beijing easier, and will also greatly reduce the current pressure operating the Line 13.

According to the schedule, there will be four more lines opening next year: Line 6 (phase I), Line 8 (phase II), Line 9 north section and Line 10 (phase II). By 2015, the Beijing railway, expected to reach 660 km of rails in total, will be fully opened.
