Tongpa 筒帕

These long-strapped cotton satchels are hand-woven from natural materials and come in almost any color or pattern you can imagine. Used by the Hani, Jingpo, Wa, Lisu and De-ang people, tongpa make the perfect bookbag, laptop case, or light summer purse.

Dai Brocade (Dai Jin) 傣锦
Dai brocade is famous not only for its beauty and durability, but for the rich symbolism woven into it along with the silk or cotton. The vibrant reds and greens pay homage to the ancestors of the Dai; elephant patterns stand for a good harvest season; while peacocks indicate luck and fortune. The Dai people have been making cloth since around 200BC, and the fabulous dyes and technique used in the production process have been honed and refined over two thousand years.

Wax Dyeing (La Ran) 蜡染
Wax Dyeing is a special process used by Yunnan’s ethnic minorities to pattern cloth. Wax is melted and splotched onto (usually cotton) textiles in the desired pattern. The cloth is then dropped into a vat of dye, after which the wax is boiled off, leaving intricate impressions on the material.

Yunnan Baiyao (White Medicinal Powder) 云南白药
This ancient homeopathic medicine was once considered sacred material by the Chinese. Totally natural, baiyao is said to cure muscular pains, external bleeding, insect bites, and to stem heavy menstrual flow.

Wood carving (Mu Diao) 木雕
If you’ve got the time or means to have it shipped back, Yunnan is one of the country’s best places to purchase tables, chairs and benches carved from large blocks of natural wood. The pieces are extraordinarily smooth and sometimes polished or lacquered, making them warm and pleasing to the touch.

Dai bamboo basketry (Daijia Zhubian) 傣家竹编
In a province where bamboo is in such abundance, it’s no wonder that the ethnic Dai minority has made an art out of basketry and reed-weaving. Patterned baskets, hats, chairs, cabinets, and any number of souvenirs and home accents can be had cheaply if you’re willing to bargain for it.
