The owner of a Taobao shop that sold phony weight loss pills to a bride-to-be who subsequently died has been fined 130,000 RMB along with two others for the manufacture and sale of fake products.
The three were also sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for three years.
Bride-to-be Xiao Jie (pseudonym) collapsed on the evening of August 13 last year and was rushed to hospital, but never woke up.
Her family was devastated, but also strongly suspected that her death was linked to the green slimming pills she had been continuously taking the past month and informed the police of their suspicions.
According to Xiao Jie’s family, she purchased the “Green S Slimming Capsules” (绿S减肥胶囊) from Taobao in July. Prior to her death, she had already fainted twice for unknown causes.
An autopsy revealed that she had abnormally high levels of Fluoxetine in her system- an antidepressant drug often prescribed for anorexia and bulimia- that is banned from use in any food or health product. High doses of the drug can be toxic, and sometimes, fatal.
Police investigations into the drug revealed that other users had experienced symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness and nausea after taking the drug.

No jail time but RMB 1.3 million fine when you manufacture and sell death pills. You can bet these guys have zero intention of paying up as they focus on how to scam their next load of gold better.

Wasn't sure if that meant suspended sentence...If so, my bad. They deserve jail.

The original article is clearer, 缓刑3年. '缓刑' = suspended sentence.
