Surprised Much? China World’s Biggest Consumer of Instant Noodles

The World Instant Noodles Association—because yes, apparently there is such a thing—announced on April 25 that sales of instant noodles worldwide in 2012 had increased by 2.7% from the previous year, with a whopping 101.4 billion packets being sold it total.

China, Indonesia, and Japan were listed as the top consumers of the product, with Chinese people buying a total of 44 billion packs, Indonesians buying 14.1 billion, and Japanese people buying 5.4 billion.

When looking at consumption per capita, South Korea topped the list, with the average South Korean slurping down 72.4 packs a year. Indonesia came second, with 57.6 packs per average person.

Emerging economies such as China, Brazil, and India saw huge rises in the consumption of the snack, no doubt related to the increasing rush of life and having less time to properly sit down in front of the table and have a relaxing meal.
