Shenzhen authorities are getting tough with big fines for businesses that flout the city’s indoor smoking ban, which was implemented in March this year.

One coffee shop was fined 30,000 RMB whilst a restaurant in Longhua was fined 10,000 for selling cigarettes and failing to put up no smoking signs.

Besides that, 4,837 people have been fined a total of 242,300 RMB for individual violations of smoking in public places. The law bans smoking in indoor workplaces, public buildings, restaurants and on public transportation.

Failing to comply with the regulations can incur on the spot fines of 50-500 RMB for individuals and a maximum of 30,000 RMB for businesses.
