Shenzhen Customs Seized More Than 2,000 Tons of Smuggled "Foreign Waste"

As part of an ongoing crackdown on “foreign waste” smuggling operations, the Shenzhen Customs authority recently seized two small ships going between Hong Kong and Macau that it suspected of transporting refuse materials from abroad into China.

Authorities found 75 different classifications of goods that are currently banned from import into China on the two ships, totally a whopping 1,814.73 tons. Among the goods, the inspection and quarantine departments identified a large number of non-PET plastic bottles as well as 998 kg of human hair waste.

Previously, the Shenzhen Customs authority seized more than 400 kg of plastic bag waste in the Shekou port, as well as 30 old aircraft tires near the city’s Qingzhou port.

To date, the authorities have handled six “foreign waste” cases, preventing more than 2,000 tons from being dumped in Mainland China.
