“Shenyang’s Highest ATM” at 2 Meters High is “Right for Yao Ming”

"This ATM machine is too high for me to use. I reckon that this machine is set at the right height for Yao Ming to use," says resident Sun Hong yesterday afternoon. Sun was referring to an ATM located at the north-east corner of the intersection of Qishan Road and Jingjiang Street in Huanggu District, Shenyang.

This ATM is two meters high and has been called "Shenyang's highest ATM" by local residents. As the majority of people who use it are unable to reach the keypad, some people have opted to bring along their own stools to stand on, or even hold up their children and instruct them to punch in their passwords for them.

This ATM is even a hassle for tall people to use. For Mr Liu, who is one meter and eighty-two centimeters tall, the keypad for the ATM is located at the same level as the top of his head. What’s more, Mr Liu is unable to read the computer display because of its slanted angle and when he tries to compensate by trying to increase his height, the glare of the sun makes everything on the screen illegible.

"This ATM is simply too demanding," Mr Liu says. "Even if I input my password, I can't see which button to press in order to access my bank balance. It makes me mad that I'm not able to withdraw my money."

The reason for this "sky high cost" of withdrawing money has to do with the residence for old-age pensioners located just to the east of the ATM. A U-shaped wheelchair access ramp has been installed, and as a result a platform that was once was provided for clients to stand upon when using the ATM has been removed.

Mr Li, director of the New Paradise Old Age Home, states that they own the property where the ATM is located and have leased the space to the bank. In July or August of this year when the road in front of the residence for pensioners was being repaired, the pedestrian walkway disappeared along with the ATM platform. At that time, the bank stopped servicing the machine and insinuated it would relocate it. But after the wheelchair ramp was installed, the ATM became operational again.

Li has tried to alleviate the problem by putting out a bench for people to stand on, but it is always stolen for use at a nearby barbeque stall.
