Construction of a mother port for international cruise liners will begin in the third quarter of this year in Shekou, Shenzhen. After it is completed, the port will serve as home to cruise liners with a capacity of up to 150,000 tons. According to the Ministry of Transport and National Development and Reform Commission “Planning for Ports in the Country” report, Shenzhen is to be one of the three hubs in the country providing services for luxury cruise liners. The Shekou International Mother Port for Cruise Liners is to be a major development in this project. Industry analysts have said that the Shekou International Mother Port for Cruise Liners should be able to bring in an increase of about 1.8 million passengers a year to Shekou in the future – placing the port above Hong Kong Disneyland as the two major attractions for tourists to the Shenzhen-Hong Kong west region.
