Shanghai Tour Group Refused Entry at the Thai Border for Not Carrying Enough Cash
May 27, 2016 By eChinacities.com

A 30-person tour group from Shanghai was recently rejected at the Thailand border for not carrying the 4,000 RMB per person mandated by the Thai government. The entire group was refused entry and the tour guide had to wait at the airport for more than three hours.

Thai media reported yesterday that the police station attached to the ancient city of Chiang Mai posted the following response on its official blog:

1) This is the official provision.

2) This is a rule for all foreign visitors, not just visitors from China.

3) This was a random inspection.

4) Most random inspections are done on tour groups upon landing

5) If a travel agency does not understand the provisions, their group can be refused

6) Tourists are supposed to carry 4,000 RMB or the equivalent. If a tourist is stopped in a random check and does not have enough cash, they can show customs they have enough money in their UnionPay account. Customs officials will then usually release them.

This sounds ridiculous. I once got pulled over in Thailand for riding a motorcycle and I didn't have a license on me (as nobody carries a motorcycle license in Thailand). I got annoyed (obviously understanding they just wanted a bribe) and asked why there were so many shops open that rented out to people without asking for their license. I also started asking for his badge number... and he told me to write my name and passport number on a piece of paper. He was like... you are from England right? I immediately agreed, and told him my name was John Lennon. I signed the paper and wrote down a bogus passport number. He told me to immediately head to the police office and pay a fine of 3000 baht or they would keep my name & passport on file... I think not. Bye! I prefer the Philippines over Thailand. Just not Manila.. Coron is really nice.
