On Mar. 13th, Zheng Jian, the chief designer of Chinese Ministry of Railways, replied to reporters that Shanghai-Hangzhou maglev project has been approved and is currently undergoing in-depth research. It is reported to be the only maglev railway line among all medium and long term railway programs in China. Construction is planned to start in 2010, with a total distance of 199.4 kilometers once completed. Currently, the 31-kilometer Shanghai Pudong Airport Line is the only established maglev railway line in China.

Back in 2006, Shanghai-Hangzhou maglev project attracted great concern. The approximate expenditure of the project was 35billion RMB at the time and the expected speed was 450 km/h, at which one could travel from Shanghai to Hangzhou in just half an hour. Later, the project was suspended due to problems concerning environmental assessment.
