Shanghai Center to Build the Fastest Elevator in the World

According to reports, the “world’s fastest elevators” are being built in the Shanghai Center, which is expected to open in 2014. Of the 100 elevators to be housed in the new skyscraper, there will be three that qualify as “the fastest elevator in the world”. These elevators will run at a speed of 1,080 metres per minute or 18 metres per second. The current fastest passenger elevator, in the Taipei 101 building, is able to run at a speed of 1,010 metres per minute and was officially certified by Guinness World Records in 2006. Shanghai Center, largely composed of offices, is 632 meters high with 121 floors.
