Potato-based Mantou Hit the Shelves in Beijing

Potato-based Mantou Hit the Shelves in Beijing
Jun 26, 2015 By eChinacities.com

The first wave of a new type of mantou buns that are 30% derived from potatoes has silently crept into Beijing supermarkets, providing some spice to the world of mantou bun selection.

These potato-derived mantou buns have only just hit the shelves in a few supermarkets, and at a price of 5.8 Yuan for 3, they’re twice as expensive as their more traditional counterparts.

In comparison to normal mantou buns, the color of these potato ones is slightly yellowish, and a close inspection of their texture shows small wrinkles formed from their fibrous makeup. While they’re much drier than normal mantou, they also pack lot more vitamins.

These new potato mantou are the result of 2 years of research and development from one of China’s agricultural science research institutes.

Other snack foods to look for in the future that will go the potato route will be doubao (a steamed bun stuffed with bean paste) huajuan (a twisty, steamed roll), jugao (a cake made from dates), and other types of cake.

There really are too many carbs in the modern Chinese diet. I've always had an urge to throw mantou up at the ceiling to see if they would stick, like kids used to do in the school bathroom with wet wads of toilet paper.
