Percentage of Elderly in Shanghai Double the National Average
Jul 29, 2009 By eChinacities.com

In 2008, there were 300,570,000 people over 60 years of age in Shanghai, accounting for 21.61 percent of the total registered population. This percentage is twice the national average, and even close to that of Japan and Sweden, the countries with the highest percentage of elderly citizens in the world. There are many factors contributing to the growth of the elderly population, the most important of which are social stability, the improvement of living standards and the development of medical care. However, the high percentage of elderly will present great challenges to the city’s sustainable development as the burden of caring for the elderly population becomes more and more acute.
