Peking University Professor Sues CCTV for Pseudo-Science Make-Up Ad

CCTV-8 is being sued by a Peking University professor for playing an advertisement for a “natural,” make-up brand that spread false information about science.

The 15 second advertisement for the Guangzhou based brand Franic constantly repeats the line, “We hate chemistry,” and fills the scene with the same five characters for the slogan. The ad has been broadcast on eight different CCTV channels.

The ad originally launched in the end of July. It caused a lot of controversy because it seemed like the constantly repeating slogan was an attempt to brainwash customers. Many noted that no cosmetics can be completely free of chemistry and that the false advertisement can be seen as fraud, and misleading to customers. Franic has not responded to the accusations and many networks stopped running the ad.

On November 19, news broke on Weibo that a Peking University chemistry professor decided to sue CCTV-8 after it continued to run the advertisement.

Zhou wrote in a statement that as of 8:30 pm on November 19, CCTV-8 was still running the advertisement. The ad shows a lack of understanding of basic science. It is, in fact, anti-science, and against education in chemistry. Zhou has been a structural chemistry professor and researcher for 20 years at Peking University and has given talks at over 30 domestic and foreign universities and research institutes.

This is just hilarious!!! You can't sue for bad quality (potentially harmful) food and stuff, you can't sue for bad environmental effects... but you can sue a TV station for saying 'we don't like chemistry'....
