Hailing from Guangzhou, 26-year-old Li Xiang and 25-year-old Sun Wen have been a happily married husband and wife for over three years. They met at a university party in 2007, and soon struck up a chord before getting married in February 2009. As the pair were still students however, they kept the marriage a secret as they were worried about how their families would react.

At the end of 2012, Li came clean (sort of) to his father and told him he’d met a girl, and planned to marry her. After seeing his father rejoice at the news, Li and Sun were relieved that they no longer had to keep their love a secret. It was during Spring Festival this year that Li’s family finally met Sun, though it was Li’s uncle, Li Jianwen, who upon laying eyes on Sun, was shocked and speechless. Li Jianwen announced, “You can’t get married!” in front the family, as he then summoned up the courage to reveal a secret of his own to the bemused crowd.

It turned out, that Li Jianwen was a previous lover of Sun’s mother and even after they formally split up and Sun’s mother remarried, kept on an affair for years. It was therefore plausible that Sun was his biological daughter. After doing a paternity test, the result concluded that they were related. The devastated couple then went to court to apply for an annulment on July 3 which was granted. Awkward much?
