Outbreak of Rhabdomyolysis in Nanjing Linked to Eating Crayfish
Aug 25, 2010 By eChinacities.com

On August 23rd, according to the Voice of China radio broadcast, several hospitals in Nanjing treated approximately ten people each for symptoms related to eating crayfish in the past week. The patients all complained of muscle aches, and were diagnosed with unusual amount of hemoglobin in their blood, resulting in a case of rhabdomyolysis – an acute breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. Some of the more critical patients also lost kidney function. Authorities suspect that chemical agents used to clean the crayfishes are to blame. The Nanjing Center for Disease Control has started an investigation into the matter. Right now, patients are in stable condition after being treated at the hospitals.
