Only 9 Out of 161 Chinese Cities Surveyed Meet Air Quality Standards
Aug 06, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The Ministry of Environmental Protection announced on August 5 that despite new air quality controls put into place across China, out of 161 cities assessed, only Zhoushan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhanjiang, Yunfu, Beihai, Haikou, Sanya and Lhasa met air quality standards this year.

Of the 166 cities that haven’t implemented the new air quality control measures, 105 were up to standard, a 7.1 percent decrease from last year.

It is understood that during the first half of 2014, 327 prefecture level cities have been carrying out air quality monitoring, including Beijing, Tianjin, and cities around the Yangtze River delta and the Pearl River delta. They are monitoring the air for PM 10, PM 2.5, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide.
