Several American media outlets have reported the existence of a secret North Korean hacking base in the North Eastern city of Shenyang.
A North Korean Defector who escaped North Korea in 2004 has claimed that there is a secret network named ‘Bureau 121’ operating out of the city, reports CNN. According to Kim Heung-Kwang, many people travel to the city under the guise of day jobs, but work as hackers at night.
Shenyang has close ties with North Korea as the closest big city to the border-furthermore, the country dialed into internet servers in Shenyang before it had internet access and all of North Korea’s internet traffic is still routed through China. The city is also home to a large North Korean population and is home to a North Korean consulate.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied the claims as spokeswoman Hua Chunying expressed in a statement that China doesn’t allow any other country or individual to conduct cyber attacks on its soil.
