Reports have emerged about a North Korean defector who crossed the border into China, killed 4 elderly people and stole money and food.

China has lodged an official complaint with Pyongyang following the incident, which took place on December 27, in a village near the Tumen River. The river marks the border between North Korea and China, and is a common place for North Korean defectors to escape from.

The 26 year old army deserter stole a pistol and crossed the border and broke into two houses in Nanping Village, killing four elderly people aged between 60-70 years old. He also stole 100 RMB and some food before fleeing.

He was shot in the stomach and captured by Chinese soldiers that evening. He is currently still in hospital for his wounds.

Whilst China who remains North Korea’s only ally has a policy of deporting defectors back to North Korea, this man will likely be tried and sentenced in China, due to the nature of his crimes.

South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo quoted a local resident saying that soldiers sneaking over the border to get food has become increasingly common.
