The Shenzhen Evening News has issued an apology to the family Yao Beina, a popular singer, for taking photos of her body after she died of breast cancer on Friday January 16.

The apology came on Sunday after thousands of people protested on Weibo demanding an apology for their behavior. The incident first came to light on Saturday morning when a micro blogger posted that three reporters from the newspaper dressed as staff and snuck into the operating room. They then took photographs of Yao’s corneas being removed for donation.

According to China Daily the post had been re-shared over 10,000 times by noon as people called for the reporters to apologize.

The apology came on Sunday, posted on the newspaper’s Weibo page:

"We sincerely apologize for the disturbance and discomfort we have caused to Yao's family, fans and netizens". They also went on to confirm that they deleted all photos at the scene following protests from Yao’s family.

Yao rose to fame in China after appearing on the ‘Voice of China’ singing competition. She has been battling breast cancer since 2011, when she had her left breast removed. She died on Friday, aged 33.
