EXPATS living in the Zhangjiang area in Pudong can apply for new visas and residence permits at a new exit-entry administration service center opening on January 5.

The service center is at 39-2 Zhangjiang Road, near Guoshoujing Road and is among eight new services for locals that will come into use next year.

Others include building private booths at almost all ATMs in the city.

The booths are totally enclosed and can be locked from the inside so customers withdrawing and depositing cash can feel safe.

About 3am on March 22 last year, a woman surnamed Song was stabbed to death at an ATM in Jing'an District when she was depositing money.

"With the defense booth, a person could withdraw money after closing the door," said police official Zhou Zheng.

"Customers can also call the police from inside if they feel they are in any danger."

About 60 percent of the city's 1,372 ATMs have already been fitted with these booths, the bureau said. The rest will be fitted by June.
