Construction of a new children’s park in Shenzhen started yesterday and is scheduled to be completed and open to the public in the summer of 2010.

Costing more than RMB 70 million (US$10 million), the 182,300-square-meter Shenzhen Children’s Amusement Park in Futian District will be three times the size of the Children’s Park in Luohu District. Located on a narrow strip of land between Qiaoxiang Road, Nonglin Road and Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, the park is expected to accommodate up to 15,200 visitors at a time.

There are not enough outdoor amusement facilities for children in Shenzhen. The existing recreational sites for children are either too small or not evenly distributed, Yu said. The new park is being built to tackle these problems, to promote ecological education and to offer a place where children can play and study in a natural environment.

The park will feature a vast stretch of greenery, a fairyland, a water paradise and a cartoon amusement park among others.

The city government plans to spend more than RMB 70 million on infrastructure and auxiliary facilities. Private investment will be allowed for the installation of various electrical and electronic entertainment facilities.

No admission fee will be charged for the public park, but visitors will have to pay to use the electronic and electrical facilities.
The amusement park will have three entrances, including one on Nonglin Road and one on Qiaoxiang Road.
