Currently, traffic signals in Guangzhou fall into two types: those with the shape of arrows or full display. However, since last July, a new type of traffic signal lights, an integration of the shape of arrows and full display, has been applied in 21 crossings. With these traffic lights, the lights with arrows displayed will go out when traffic is not busy, thus saving 60 seconds each time for both drivers and pedestrians.

Both pedestrians and vehicles can benefit from these new-style traffic lights. Billboards will be set up at crossings to promote the traffic lights, which, if they gain popularity, would be installed across the city.
