New Legislation Proposed after Shocking Shenzhen Domestic Violence Statistics Announced
Aug 26, 2014 By eChinacities.com

According to recent statistics from a report by the Shenzhen Women’s Federation, domestic violence occurs in 55 percent of Shenzhen homes between people aged 28-50. Among this group, 85.8 percent of violent incidents occur between married couples and 93.9 percent of these are cases of husbands being violent towards their wives.

Furthermore, the report found that education, or lack thereof, is not a large contributing factor; professors, teachers and many highly educated people were found to be committing violence against their spouse.

In light of these shocking findings, the ‘Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Anti-Domestic Violence Bill’ has been drafted, with the definition of domestic violence being expanded to include ‘verbal’ and ‘economic’ abuse.
